A Cavan councillor has called for a moratorium on the development of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities.
These are facilities of energy storage technology that uses a group of batteries in the grid to store electrical energy.
New Cathaoirleach, John Paul Feeley, made the call at June's meeting of Cavan County Council.
There are currently two appeals lodged with An Coimisiún Pleanála relating to two BESS facilities in Cavan.
The Fianna Fail man is concerned about the risk of fire relating to these facilities and points to international cases where fires have broken out.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Feeley expressed concern about the technology.
"The technology is at least questionable, and experience internationally is worrying as to what happens when an issue arises with these batteries. The state of California is very much ahead of us in respect to the development of this type of infrastructure, and my understanding from media coverage there is that as a result of a very substantial fire in one of these facilities, the authorities there have placed a moratorium on granting permission for any further such facilities until the mechanisms can be figured out to deal with these situations."
