A meeting was recently held for Monaghan's Local Community Safety Partnership.
This is a statutory group which included local councillors, local authority officials, An Garda Síochána, representatives from the HSE and the Child and Family Agency Tusla as well as community and resident representatives.
The objective of the LCSP is to improve community safety and well-being through a collaborative, community-led approach by bringing together residents, local authorities, state services and community representatives to create and implement local community safety plans.
Cllr Alan Johnston is the Chairperson of the group, and described the recent meeting as very productive.
It touched on issues such as rural crime, and gives people an opportunity to stay informed with what is happening in the area.
Speaking to Northern Sound, he outlined the rate and types of crime seen in Monaghan.
"We had a presentation on local crime stats for Monaghan and the highlight of it is that there's very low incidents of violent crime. So that's reassuring and it's good to know. Obviously for some of the victims in those cases, it's a terrible ordeal and situation, but thankfully the numbers are very low and overall crime is reducing in Monaghan. So again, that's good to hear. One of the interesting things is that one area of an increase in crime would have been on cyber crime and fraud. So maybe online scams or phishing or people clicking links, you know, and losing significant amounts of money."
