Lower turnout in Irish elections a 'worrying trend'

"We and our predecessors, and our ancestors, and our forebearers fought very hard to give us the right to vote."

Catherine Connolly leads the way in the latest opinion poll of the presidential election campaign.

With just days until polling day, the Business Post/RED C Research Presidential survey found the independent candidate is polling at 44 per cent.

Her opponent Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys stands on 25 per cent while Fianna Fail's Jim Gavin is down on 10 per cent despite pulling out of the contest.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, the editor of the Business Post, Daniel McConnell said that 1 in 5 voters polled still don’t know who they are voting for.

He believes that there will be a sub 40% turn out in the election, but that a drop in turn outs across Irish elections is a worrying trend.

Mr. McConnell said: "We and our predecessors, and our ancestors, and our forebearers fought very hard to give us the right to vote, and I think it is a worrying trend that we are seeing turnouts drop.

"Not just in Presidential Elections, the General Election Turnout was lower last November than it has been for quite some time.

"Ireland traditionally has turnout higher than most other European countries, but we now seem to be falling into line with other European countries, with turnout dropping," Mr. McDonnell added.
