A man appeared in court this week over stealing three coffee makers on three different dates from the same department store in Monaghan Town.
Raivis Rozentals (24) carried out the thefts at Fleming's Department Store in Monaghan between January 12th and 17th, 2022.
The three DeLonghi manufactured appliances were valued at €399 each. The accused, of Riverside, Monaghan, appeared at a sitting of Monaghan District Court and pleaded guilty to each of the thefts before Judge Raymond Finnegan.
Judge Finnegan told the court the accused had previously entered guilty pleas in May of 2022 to allow for compensation to be paid.
The money has never been paid back to date and the judge remarked how Mr Rozentals appeared to "like his coffee" in view of how he chose to return to the same location and steal the exact same coffee maker on three alternate dates.
Sgt Damien Galligan, for the State, said while the accused had no previous convictions to his name, none of the stolen items were ever retrieved. Roísín Courtney, defending, conceded her client's offending had been fuelled by an underlying drugs habit at the time.
Ms Courtney asked the court to allow her client a further two months to gather the necessary monies.
Mr Rozentals was consequently remanded on bail to a sitting of Monaghan District Court on March 23. Judge Finnegan said that if he didn't have the €1,200 compensation with him on that date he would be going to prison.
