A man aged in his 30s has been jailed in relation to theft from a Co Monaghan GAA club.
Jason Smithers of no fixed abode appeared before Monaghan District Court today in relation to the theft of empty cans and bottles from the Éire Óg club in Smithboro.
The court was told that the theft that occurred on the 6th of June last from the local GAA club resulted in an estimated lost of €200.
Judge Stephanie Coggans was told that a man can be seen entering from a gold Renault Megane on CCTV footage at the club grounds. The footage shows a man emptying the contents of the return bins and loading them into the car.
Mr Smithers pleaded guilty and was jailed for 1 month for this offence. The accused also pleaded guilty and was jailed for 1 month for another theft in relation to stealing €80 of petrol from Daybreak on the Dublin Rd in Kingscourt.
Court presenter Sgt Lisa McEntee told the court that no attempt was made by the accused to pay for the fuel on the 13th of June last at the local service station. Joseph Smith BL, who stood in to represent the defendant said Mr Smithers has a number of underlying issues and had been living in a car with 3 dogs.
Mr Smithers told Judge Coggans that he did not ever want to cause any harm and that he was at his wits end. He apologised to the court for his actions.
Mr Smithers has been in custody since July 21st and will now remain in jail until he appears at Monaghan District Court via video link on the 1st of September in relation to an alleged number of road traffic matters. In handing down the sentence for both theft charges, Judge Coggans asked for the accused to get direct medical psychology attention.
