Conor McGregor made a surprise visit to Cavan and Monaghan yesterday as he attempted to rally support in his Presidential bid.
McGregor announced that he plans to run for the country's top office and has revealed to Northern Sound that he intends on visiting as many areas as possible over the coming weeks.
The former MMA fighter must be nominated by four local councils if he is to be named on the ballot, a move that seems unlikely at this point. McGregor visited Monaghan Town yesterday evening as he attempted to sway local politicians into backing him.
He visited a number of local businesses and met with Fine Gael TD for Cavan and Monaghan David Maxwell, but he confirmed that he is pledging his full support to party candidate Heather Humphreys. The Dubliner also visited Cavan Town and Ballyjamesduff last night.
While in Monaghan, Mr McGregor said see he wanted to see a democratic process play out as he called on council representatives to back him.
When asked why he wanted to be President, he said his reasoning was to return the power to the people, as per the founding proclamation in 1922, adding that he wanted to see more power given to the local councils around Ireland so they can decide the outcome of their own communities.
