A huge security operation is underway in Vatican City today ahead of Pope Francis’s funeral tomorrow. President Higgins and his wife Sabina will pay their respects at the Pope's lying in state today.
Other world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, are expected to arrive in Rome this evening. Reporter Barry Whyte has more from St Peter’s Square in the Vatican:
Security has been tighter in Rome this morning ahead of Pope Francis’s funeral. Some 2,000 local police officers are on duty, joined by thousands more officers from the national security forces. Boats are patrolling on the Tiber, while drones and snipers are also being used. World leaders including US President Donald Trump are expected to arrive in Rome later this evening. While Irish President Michael D Higgins arrived last night.
