Local councillor Stiofán Conaty has welcomed news that CMETB is to discuss the establishment of new Irish-medium primary schools in County Cavan.
It emerged at Monday's meeting of Cavan County Council that Cavan Monaghan Educational and Training Board is to discuss the idea, as calls grow across the county for new Gaelscoileanna.
The news comes on foot of a private members' question submitted by Cllr Conaty, seeking an update on a motion he placed on the council agenda last May, which asked that CMETB consider the possibility of patronising a second Gaelscoil for Cavan.
Currently, Gaelscoil Bhréifne in Cavan Town is the only Irish-medium primary school in the county.
Cllr Conaty says this has left Cavan as an outlier nationally, as the Irish Language revival continues to gather real momentum across the island over recent years.
According to the latest figures from the Department of Education, with just one Gaelscoil, Cavan has the lowest percentage of children attending Irish medium education in the 26 counties.
Speaking as Gaeilge in the council chamber on Monday, Cllr Conaty thanked the council for their reply and asked that councillors who also sit on the CMETB wholeheartedly support the idea.
Cllr Conaty has previously advocated that a new Irish medium primary school be set up in the Cootehill area and also in the populated southeast of the county.
"As I said in May, I am of the firm opinion that there is a need for new Gaelscoileanna in Cavan, as well as an Irish medium secondary school. As has been the case in Monaghan, the ETB could and should play an active a role in this"
Cllr Conaty has previously advocated that a new Irish medium primary school be set up in the Cootehill area and also in the populated southeast of the county, where attempts at establishing a new Gaelscoil had reached an advanced stage over 15 years ago.
While Cllr Conaty does not sit on Cavan Monaghan Education and Training Board, the item has been placed on the agenda for the upcoming CMETB meeting, following his motion on the issue in May of last year.
