Monaghan business sends staff home due to flooding

"Something needs to be done on this."

A business owner has said that she had to send staff home today (January 27th) due to flooding in Monaghan Town.

Caoimhe Clerkin from Lads and Dads Barbershop in Monaghan Town has told Northern Sound she is "so frustrated" with flooding.

Due to Storm Chandra, to entrance to the shopping centre car park, beside the Credit Union, was flooded this morning.

Ms. Clerkin said that the area has been flooded three times in recent months, and that customers don't come into the store when there is flooding.

After sending staff home this morning, she called for urgent action to be taken to help local businesses.

She said: "We've been flooded in this area two or three times in the last few months. It leaves business very slow, people can't get in and the entrance is unpassable. Something needs to be done on this earlier."

Speaking to Northern Sound this afternoon, the Caothaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, PJ O'Hanlon called for the government to do more.

He said: "Look it, its not just in Monaghan Town. I've had calls from people this morning who have water coming up to their doors, I've had calls where trees have been down.

"Unfortunately, as a result of the climate, weather is changing. What we are going to have to do, not just as a local authority, but also through government, but we are going to have to prepare for this.

"We had Storm Éowyn last year, do we think we're never going to get something similar again? We are. What we have to do is sit down and start putting proper defence systems in place," he added.

In a statement issued to Northern Sound News this evening from Monaghan County Council.

They say they can confirm that prolonged, heavy rainfall associated with Storm Chandra has resulted in elevated water levels on both the River Blackwater and the River Shambles.

As ground conditions were already saturated, this has led to localised flooding along Castle Road, adjacent to Monaghan Town Shopping Centre.

Castle Road is currently closed due to flooding, and traffic management measures are in place for safety. Council outdoor crews are on site and continue to monitor water levels and road conditions closely.

The situation remains under active review, and further updates will be provided as necessary.

The statement ended by saying members of the public are reminded not to enter flood waters, whether on foot or in vehicles, as depths can be deceptive and pose a significant safety risk.
