A public park, community centre, social housing and assisted living for older people are all plans being mooted by Monaghan County Council for the site of the former St Louis Convent.
Monaghan County Council acquired the five buildings and 21 acres last April. Recently, a delegation of councillors were taken around the site to see for themselves the property and grounds available to the Council to develop for the future generations of Monaghan townspeople.
Among the options on the table are to convert the St. Louis Chapel into a performance space and artistic venue; to turn the nursing home into a visitor hub and the rooms on the upper floors into visitor accommodation.
Cllr Seán Conlon, the Cathaoirleach of Monaghan Municipal District told Northern Sound when finished, the new town centre development will be "gift for Monaghan".
