Co Monaghan has seen a "huge surge" in international tourism.

That's according to Elizabeth McGuinness who is the owner of Lynster House located in Milltown, just outside of Monaghan Town.

The popular guesthouse was recently accredited with the highest possible award of 'four stars' by Failte Ireland.

Lynster House will now officially feature on the Discover Ireland website and will also be promoted by Monaghan Tourism, Monaghan County Council, Failte Ireland and Ireland's Ancient East.

According to Elizabeth, in previous years, people weren't coming to Monaghan unless they were staying for a wedding, funeral or family occasion.

However, she says this has since changed particularly since the Irish Times 'Best Place to Live in Ireland' campaign featured both Monaghan and Glaslough back in 2021 brining "tens of thousands" to the area since then.

Speaking to Northern Sound, the local business owner says there's now a "sharper focus" on how Co Monaghan can grow within the tourism sector, and she is "very confident" that tourism will continue to get "bigger and better" each year.
