A man aged in his 20s from Co Monaghan accused of threatening to “slit” the throat of a barmaid has been further remanded in jail.
The man was brought before Monaghan District Court yesterday in relation to the incident that occurred last week.
21-year-old John Cawley of no fixed abode, Castleblayney, Monaghan was brought before a sitting of Cavan District Court in recent days charged with assault, criminal damage, threatening to damage property and public order arising from an incident in Castleblayney on December 1st.
The 21-year-old appeared via video link at Monaghan District Court yesterday in relation to the incident following bail not being granted at the sitting at Cavan District Court.
Evidence was heard by the arresting Garda, saying that Gardai called to The Emerald Bar, Main Street, Castleblayney on December 1st following a report from a named alleged female victim that she had been assaulted by Mr Cawley. The Garda said the woman revealed how she had been allegedly approached by the accused where he allegedly told her he would “slit her throat” if she attempted to attend his grandfather’s funeral.
The court heard that alleged threat also contained a reference to the woman being “thrown in on top” of the deceased man before Mr Cawley allegedly pushed past her while striking her into the chest.
During this altercation, it’s alleged that criminal damage was caused to the public house during the course of the incident, namely damage to an internal bar door.
It’s also the State’s case that Mr Cawley pledged to “burn her house” if she reported the matter to gardaí. Mr Cawley appeared online in front of Judge Gerard Jones and was further remanded in custody to appear by Videolink at Monaghan District Court on the 22nd of December.
