Shabra Plastics and Recycling Ltd - which is based in Castleblayney, met with Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation, Robert Troy, this week, to discuss the issues it is facing in the sector.
The company, which employs 50 people locally, highlighted the impact of increased costs due to a levy on virgin material, and the dramatic surge in demand for recycled material in Europe and UK
Until recently, the vast majority of PET bottles were exported from Ireland to those countries.
As a result of the levies, European and UK companies starting with a €400/£200 per tonne price tag now have a 'competitive advantage' over Irish businesses bidding for bottles in Ireland.
Shabra Plastics says Irish businesses can no longer compete to purchase the bottles.
Meanwhile, Minister Troy committed to investigating the matter with relevant officials.
Deputy Niamh Smith facilitated the meeting.
She added, "Minister Troy heard in depth how this is affecting their company which employs 50 people In Castleblayney.
