More funding for local SOSAD services 'essential'

Cllr Fay says there is a total lack of accessible early intervention services.

Cavan councillor Brendan Fay is calling for more funding to be allocated to SOSAD services.

He was reacting to CSO figures which showed that 2020 recorded the largest number of female deaths due to suicide in a five-year period between 2018 and 2022.

Overall, the five-year average of suicides between 2018 and 2022 in Ireland was 526.

Cavan was the local authority where this share was highest, where 2.3% of all deaths in Cavan were due to suicide.

Cllr Brendan Fay says particularly since Covid, mental health pressures have been rising in Co Cavan.

The local representative believes this is driven by isolation, financial strains, and addiction.
