Three people accused of attacking a man in Monaghan with a baseball bat and leaving him fighting for his life in hospital have had their original charges upgraded.
25 year-old Jason Maughan and his brother 24 year-old Stephen Maughan of Mullaghmatt and Gortakeegan in Monaghan along with 22 year-old Molly Roberts of Lakeview, Enagh, Monaghan all appeared last week over the charges.
They were all charged with assault causing harm to a man in his 40s following an incident on the Park Road in Monaghan Town on January 14th last.
The three have been on bail since the incident occurred. The case was before Judge Raymond Finnegan at Monaghan District Court last week and the court was told how fresh charges have now been added.
The initial assault causing harm charges have now been upgraded to ones of assault causing serious harm.
The penalties, upon conviction on indictment, carries a maximum term of life in prison. All three also stand accused of producing a baseball bat during the course of the same incident.
The court heard previously how the injured man was left in a critical condition in the intensive care unit of Dublin's Beaumont Hospital after he was allegedly violently assaulted in Monaghan town on January 14th.
The two Maughan brothers and Ms Roberts were further remanded on bail to a sitting of Monaghan District Court on November 24th for the anticipated serving of a book of evidence.
