Cavan and Monaghan county councils have a number of native species saplings to give away free to communities who wish to plant trees in public spaces.
The effort is part of National Tree Week which is being run in conjunction with the Tree Council of Ireland.
This year's theme is 'Biodiversity begins with Trees', and the focus will be on how the country's trees and hedgerows provide a haven and food source for mosses, insects, climbing plants, birds and squirrels.
There are also a number of webinars and events happening around the country to mark National Tree Week.
And, to bag some trees, communities are asked to email their local authorities at Cavancoco.ie or Monaghancoco.ie
"Trees support even more life after they die, so we shouldn't rush to cut out standing deadwood or clear away fallen branches or leaves. Rotting wood provides food for fungi and beetles, while leaves provide winter cover for hibernating bees and hedgehogs. They also return nutrients to the soil as they decompose," a spokesperson for the Tree Council of Ireland added.
