The continued need for a domestic violence refuge has been highlighted by local Aontú Senator Sarah O'Reilly.
Senator O'Reilly raised the issue in the Seanad in recent days asking the question does it take eight years to select a site for a local refuge.
She says the lengthy wait and delays for a refuge in Cavan and Monaghan sound like a zero approach towards tackling this appalling crime.
During Senator O'Reilly's contribution in the Seanad, she referenced the latest figures from Women's Aid which show more than 1 in 3 women have experienced psychological, physical and/or sexual abuse from an intimate partner. Cavan and Monaghan is two of the nine counties across the country that doesn't have a refuge space for domestic violence victims.
The local senator says women who take that courageous step to leave their abuser should not have to travel across the country to find refuge. The Co Cavan senator says this places an additional emotional and financial hardship on victims and that's not right and more needs to be done to deliver this very much need facility in the region.
