Local TD for Cavan-Monaghan, Brendan Smith has welcomed the launch of the first ever all-island apprenticeship programme.
He described it as a "landmark moment" for education on the island of Ireland.
Deputy Smith made the remarks following the joint announcement by the Governments of Ireland and Northern Ireland of the first all-island apprenticeship.
The initiative marks a new chapter in how both jurisdictions approach skills development and talent support.
The Accounting Technologist Apprenticeship, developed by Accounting Technicians Ireland (ATI), will be delivered jointly by Technological University of the Shannon and The Open University in Northern Ireland.
Deputy Smith described the news as a "significant step forward" in strengthening educational and economic links between the North and South.
Speaking to Northern Sound, he explained: "We cannot put the cart before the horse when it comes to reunification. The prudent approach is to first build understanding and cooperation between communities across this island.
"I have consistently outlined the benefits that will accrue to all of this country through the strengthening and further development of the All-Ireland economy which has been a direct beneficiary of the Good Friday Agreement. As demand for specialised skills grows, providing training through institutions in both the North and South will expand the pool of skilled workers our economies need.
"Delivering education to a shared, high standard creates greater opportunities for workers and businesses alike. As technology continues to evolve, we must prepare the next generation to be agile, innovative and ready to lead in emerging fields. This new programme is an important step in that direction, for the benefit of the entire island."
