Nitrates Derogation of 'huge concern' to local farmers

Mr Brady said the IFA has worked hard to ensure that farmers can still get the derogation as it is "needed" going forward for the next four years as farmers need to plan.

Proposed changes to the Nitrates Derogation is causing major concern amongst local farmers.

That's according to Maurice Brady who is Cavan County Chairman of the IFA.

The proposed changes are up for review and Minister Martin Heydon must submit his application by early September with a decision due to be made on it before the end of the year.

Cavan IFA met with Lakeland Diaries yesterday and were informed that 50% of their supplier's farms are in derogation and about 60% of all the milk supplied to Lakeland Dairies comes from derogation farms.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Mr Brady said the IFA has pushed hard on this issue for two years or more.

He said there is a lot of uncertainty at the minute and "uncertainty is never helpful."
