Inland Fisheries Ireland say they still haven't found a direct pollution source in relation to a significant fish kill on Lough Sheelin last month.
Several hundred fish were dead in early August at the Mountnugent River and Captain's Bay area of Lough Sheelin.
A fish kill the previous week in the area showed the numbers to be around 70 fish dead. Several hundred dead fish had sunk to the river bed upon expiration and were not visible in initial checks of the river bed, until decomposition caused them to float to the surface.
Mortalities were observed in Captain's Bay, Lough Sheelin and a circa 2km stretch of the Mountnugent River. The incident at the time was believed to have been caused by a prolonged spell of hot weather with this theory still not confirmed through investigations.
IFI officers say at this time investigations of the site and on-site measurements have not yet found a direct pollution source.
Cllr Noel Connell hopes Inland Fisheries Ireland will bring a definite answer to the cause of this. The local councillor says he doesn't want to see this happening again.
