Gardaí received a report of a fire at a domestic residence in the Killygowan area of Co Cavan, at around 7:35pm yesterday evening.
Local fire services attended the scene and extinguished the fire.
The body of one person has been recovered within the extensively damaged residence. This body remains at the scene at this time. The scene of the fire is currently preserved for a technical examination. The office of the local Coroner has been notified. Enquiries are ongoing.
Cavan Fire Service issued Northern Sound with the following statement: At 19:28 hours on Monday evening 6th October, Cavan Town and Killeshandra Fire Brigades were alerted to a domestic fire at a property in Drummullan. On arrival, firefighters encountered a well-developed fire, with the roof structure already having collapsed and the first floor completely enveloped.
Teams using breathing apparatus were committed to the building and brought the fire under control. Following a detailed search under challenging conditions, the remains of one deceased adult casualty were discovered upstairs in the building.
