Over 200 court referrals to probation services recorded locally

The service assesses and manages offenders and supports their rehabilitation and reduce re-offending.
Co. Longford recorded the country's second highest figure of referrals, with data revealing between 251 and 300 referrals per 100,000 residents.

However, the Northern Sound region is on the other end of the scale, with 101 to 150 referrals per 100,000 residents in both counties Cavan and Monaghan.
The total number of court referrals to the service across Cavan and Monaghan was 205.
While 40 community service orders were issued per unit of the population in the Northern Sound region.
Nationally, more than 222,000 community service hours were ordered in lieu of a jail sentence, the equivalent of 856 years in prison.
This resulted in over €2.8 million worth of unpaid work.
There were 609 referrals for children between the ages of 12 and 17, a figure that's grown by 10 per cent on the previous year and is at its highest since 2015.
