Over 400 of the 691 private rental properties inspected in 2024 failed to meet standards.
The Housing Minister, James Brown, yesterday announced the highest ever number of inspections.
The Department of Housing has provided a break-down of the number of inspections carried out per local authority in 2024.
In the Northern Sound region, Cavan County Council carried out the most inspections at 405.
This included the examination of 331 dwellings, with 221 properties not complying with regulatory requirements upon first inspection.
This is followed by Co. Monaghan, where the local county council carried out a total of 363 inspections, of these, 360 private rental dwellings.
219 units did not satisfy legally-enforced standards upon first inspection.
Two prohibition notices were issued to landlords in both counties Monaghan and Cavan respectively.
A prohibition notice is served when the housing authority believes a landlord has failed to comply with an improvement notice served on them.
Neither Monaghan or Cavan County Councils pursued legal action against the landlords following the issue of the notices.
Despite the level of non-compliances, Threshold CEO John Mark McCafferty says the rise in inspections is positive:
Nationally, 80 thousand 150 inspections were carried out by local authorities during 2024, a 26 per cent increase since 2023.
