Over 50% septic tank inspections failed across region last year

Local Authorities targeted their inspections near rivers and household drinking water wells which are most at risk of contamination by faulty septic tanks.

 

An average of over 50% of septic tank inspections failed in Cavan and Monaghan last year.
The figures from the Environmental Protection Agency showed the failure rate was 52% in Cavan, and 65% in Monaghan.
328 septic systems failed between 2013 and 2024, with over 87% of these accumulated failings fixed by the end of last year.

Local Authorities targeted their inspections near rivers and household drinking water wells which are most at risk of contamination by faulty septic tanks.
Nationally, 56% of Domestic Waste Water Treatment System inspections that failed did so because they were not built or maintained properly.
