Over 80 pubs have closed across Cavan and Monaghan in the last 20 years.
A new report from the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland shows a sharp decrease in the number of pubs in rural areas. According to the report, a total of 83 pubs have closed permanently in Cavan & Monaghan since 2005. 20 years ago, there were 221 pubs in Cavan. Now, according to the figures, there are 174 remaining, totaling 47 closures in the county since 2005. Monaghan has suffered the most in the region, with 85 pubs still open, down from 121, 20 years ago.
Publican and president of the Vintners Federation of Ireland Michael O’Donovan says rural areas are being hit especially hard by closures.
Nationally, 2,100 pubs have shut up shop for good since 2005.
