A powerful new exhibition chronicling the extraordinary legacy of Project Children will be opened at Monaghan County Museum this week.
Project Children Stories showcases a compelling archive of photographs, personal testimonies, and video footage, documenting five decades of a grassroots peace-building initiative.
The project helped foster cross-community understanding during the Troubles. The exhibition has been developed as part of a cultural partnership between Monaghan County Council and Project Children.
Founded in 1975 by NYPD bomb squad officer Denis Mulcahy and his brother Pat, Project Children brought over 23,000 children from across Northern Ireland-both Catholic and Protestant-to spend summers with host families across the United States.
At the height of the Troubles, this grassroots initiative offered thousands of young people a temporary escape from conflict, and the opportunity to experience peace, understanding, and friendship in a neutral environment. A special event is happening in Monaghan on Wednesday to officially launch the exhibition that will be in place at the Peace Campus for 6 months.
A historic parade is set to take place beginning at 5pm on Wednesday leaving the Courthouse Square and leading the way to the Peace Campus.
The parade prior to the launch will be led by the Garda band along with the NYPD band. Liam Bradley, Curator of Monaghan County Museum says it's an event that will be historic and he is recommending locals to come along to the launch.
