There is "real excitement" about the expansion of the Marina in Clones.
That's according to Hugh Tunney, the manager of the Ulster Canal Stores in Clones.
Waterways Ireland has said that they intend to apply for permission to extend the Ulster Canal in Clones.
In an application submitted to Monaghan County Council for pre-validation they say the purposed development would run the townlands of Clonlura, Clonnagore, Clonoony, Drumsloe and Roranna.
The development will consist of the restoration and rebuilding of approximately 3.75km section of the historical Ulster Canal corridor for tourism and recreation.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Mr. Tunney said that phase three of the plan may begin in the spring or summer of 2026.
He said that works will begin in Wattlebridge, working back towards Clones.
Mr. Tunney said: "Obviously, Phase 1 was from Lough Erne to Belturbet, that's completed.
"They came to Clones and did Phase 2 with our lovely new marina and canal walkway, which goes out 1.5km just across the border into Fermanagh.
"Phase 3 is planned to begin, well, spring or summer 2026. They're talking about four to five years for completion. They're going to start the works in Wattlebridge, and work back toward Clones," Mr. Tunney added.
