A local councillor has praised Monaghan County Council for taking issues with dereliction by the "scruff of the neck" and getting things done. It was confirmed at this month's sitting of the local authority that 13 Old Cross Square would be redeveloped after over 40 years of lying vacant. According to Cllr Seamus Treanor, for "too many years" talks have taken place about doing something about this vacant building and "he's glad" that in recent years Monaghan County Council has enforced a law regarding dereliction.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Treanor said it's "great to see" compulsory orders on houses around the town and that 13 Old Cross Square will now be completely rebooted and brought up to 2025 housing standards. With such a shortage of housing in Monaghan Town, Cllr Treanor says it's "totally unfair" for young couples who are trying to get on the property ladder when good buildings are going to waste:
