The roads alongside the N3 in the wider Virginia area are in a scandalous condition due to high volumes of traffic diverting off the national route.
That's according to Cllr Shane P O'Reilly, who says he has never seen the roads in the area as bad during his 21 years in politics.
He said motorists travelling in both directions are using the rural roads as a way to escape the 'rat race' that Virginia has become. The local councillor said there is no difference in traffic in Virginia on a Tuesday evening and a Friday evening and people are looking to travel other ways as they seek an alternative to the built up congestion that there is each day.
Cllr O'Reilly raised the issue at the Ballyjamesduff Municipal Meeting , adding that the local councillors in the MD will write to the Minister of Transport calling for funding for these rural roads. He said the bypass needs to happen and happen now, but the Mullagh native said we need to be very honest and he believes he'll be a very old man by the time the bypass comes.
The Independent Ireland councillor says the roads in the area are dire and government needs to address this issues sooner rather than later.
