Russian fighters 'intercepted' in Irish airspace

We need to invest in a proper radar system for Ireland as a matter of urgency.

Ireland's air security has been called into question after the UK intercepted two Russian fighters in its airspace yesterday. The Royal Air Force (RAF) scrambled fighter jets and intercepted two long-range maritime patrol bombers near the Shetland Islands in Scotland.

They were monitored for a time. Defence and Security Analyst, Declan Power says we need to invest in a proper radar system for Ireland as a matter of urgency.  "Just because we don't have the fighter jets doesn't mean that we wouldn't have some say in what is happening.

"The fact that we would know what's in our air space means that we could have a much more grown up conversation with the UK regarding the levels of assistance. We would have a better say in the design of the assistance architecture if we were to have a closer element to that," he added.
