Samaritans Drogheda and North East are set to open a new hub in Monaghan Town. It is hoped the new hub will open in June of this year. Margaret Fahy who is the Director of the Drogheda and North-East branch says the decision arose due to a noticeable increase in demand.
Statistics show that in 2020, 1.5% of deaths nationally were due to suicide, however this went up to 1.8% in border counties. Margaret noted that loneliness is the top of reason why people contact the service, particularly since Covid. Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, Margaret said the Samaritans can offer a space for people to open up and talk openly knowing that they will not be judged:
