The need for new town and village name signs has been highlighted by a local councillor.
Fine Gael Councillor Trevor Smith said that in some areas signage have become 'shabby'.
He said that in some towns and villages in Cavan signage on approach roads have become tired and need replacing. Cavan County Council have confirmed a new scheme is to be launched beginning with a pilot scheme which will new signage in Bailieboro and Mountnugent being rolled out.
The council will then launch a scheme for towns and villages to apply, Senior Executive Officer, John Donohoe pointed out that there won't be funding for every sign. Cllr Smith says while some towns have applied for funding previously and have not been successful, he hopes this new scheme will work towards helping the areas that want their welcome signage changed.
Cllr Smith says,"I would have highlighted at the municipal meeting, some of the town signs entrance into towns are getting quite shabby, and I know that a lot of the local community groups have sought funding to replace signage going into their towns. So, the likes of Mountnugent they would have applied last year from municipal funding, and were unfortunate not to get funding. So Ballyjamesduff, again, signs have got shabby, and Crosskeys development have said that they would like to replace their signs. So I brought it up at the municipal meeting, looking for a scheme. So I'm glad to report today that there's a scheme coming forward where two towns are going to be on a pilot project this year, and Mountnugent is one of them, where the signs will be changed for new welcome signs in the village."
