A local Senator has said that rural communities have not gotten the supports they need, due to the rising fuel crisis.
In response to the government plans to relieve pressure caused by rising fuel prices, Senator Sarah O'Reilly said that the measures "fall short of what is needed".
According to Senator O'Reilly, "soaring fuel prices" are placing unbearable pressure on farmers, fishers and rural communities, with serious consequences for food security and household costs.
She also pointed out that agri-diesel has gone up by 50% in the last month, while farmers are paying significant carbon taxes on fuel.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Senator O'Reilly said that the issue needs to be addressed properly.
She said: "The huge surge has been damage, and it does threaten to undermine rural communities, and food production costs.
"The reality is, rural communities have not got the supports they need from this government with the fuel tax deductions. The rising cost of agri-diesel, petrol, diesel, and home heating oil are squeezing our farmers, fishermen, and our rural families," Senator O'Reilly added.
