Shops and cafes could be forced by law to accept cash payments

The requirements could include having a minimum number of cashpoints per town or region and are expected to bring independent ATM operators under Central Bank supervision.

The Finance Minister says he'll consider a provision where businesses which only accept cash payments would have to offer card payments also.

It comes as shops and cafes could be forced to accept cash payments under provisions outlined in a draft bill.

Banks will also have to offer 'reasonable access to cash'.
