A suitable location has now been identified in Monaghan for a 12-unit refuge.
Safe Ireland confirmed the news in response to a Parliamentary Question put forward by Cavan-Monaghan TD Brendan Smith.
The exact location has not been put in the public domain as of yet according to Deputy Smith.
The identification of the site has enabled Safe Ireland Cavan and Monaghan, with the support of the Housing Agency, to submit an initial Stage 1 application under the Capital Assistance Scheme (CAS).
This application has been approved by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, and work is now progressing towards submission of the Stage 2 CAS application.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Deputy Smith expressed his delight with these developments, noting that the refuge, once completed, will provide vital protection and support for individuals and families affected by domestic violence.
Deputy Smith also praised the decision by both Cavan and Monaghan County Councils to allocate three units each from their social housing stock, delivering an additional six Safe Homes for those in need in 2026.
Deputy Smith told Northern Sound: "I am very pleased to have received confirmation from Safe Ireland, in response to my Parliamentary Question, that a site has been secured in Monaghan and that progress is now being made towards CAS Stage 2 approval.
"When completed, this refuge will offer a safe, supportive environment for those who have experienced domestic violence and will play a crucial role in providing protection and recovery services."
"I want to commend the ongoing work of Safe Ireland, and particularly Cavan and Monaghan County Councils, for their strong collaboration on this project. This level of commitment to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of those experiencing domestic violence is exactly what is required to successfully deliver a project of this importance."
