The recent reduction of speed limits last month local roads from 80km to 60km is confusing motorists.
That's according to local councillor, Trevor Smith, who says he has been inundated by local motorists over the reduction.
The changes came into effect on February 7th last for local rural roads. Cllr Smith said the confusion has been heightened by the erection of signage with five-stripe sights and not signs clearly demonstrating 60km.
The meeting heard that on the autobahn in Germany there are areas where there are no speed limits, and they are marked with circular white signs with four black diagonal lines.
Cllrs raised concerns that the new signage here is very similar and when it comes to visitors from Germany, there could be a major issue with motorists from there getting confused and thinking there is no speed limit. Councillors gathered at this month's meeting of the Ballyjamesduff Municipal District were told that the cost of erecting the signage across the county for the speed limit reduction stood at €350,000.
The speed limit changes are a directive from government for all counties across the country. Cllr Smith said the changes have caused great annoyance for many, with some locals not able to clearly identify which road was now at 60km or 80km per hour route.
