A local TD has welcomed the announcement that Dundalk Institute of Technology will merge with Queens University Belfast.
Fianna Fáil TD, Brendan Smith believes that the partnership will have a positive impact on students across Cavan and Monaghan, given the proximity to the University.
Deputy Smith told Northern Sound about students who attend Cavan Institute of Technology, before going onto DkIT to study to degree level.
The TD also highlighted that plans are in place for a "major building development" at Cavan Institute.
He called for additional permanent accommodation on the campus in Cavan Town.
Deputy Smith believes that Cavan Institute provides a great pathway to other studies.
He said: "We have very exciting plans for a major building development at Cavan Institute. Minister Lawless at my request will be visiting Cavan and Monaghan in the future.
"I have outlined to him the great need for additional permanent accommodation on the Cathedral Road campus in Cavan town, alongside the existing college.
"With increasing enrolment in our local institutes, the linkage there is with Dundalk Institutes, it provides a great pathway for students who have completed second level, going on for specific qualifications ," Deputy Smith added.
