The DSPCA is urging people not to fuel animal cruelty by buying dogs as Christmas presents.

It's reminding the public that pets are a serious commitment -- and should not be bought as presents as if they're a toy.

Spokeswoman Gillian Bird says people should walk away from dodgy dog dealers at any time of the year.
