The NCT is a "money racket" that should be scrapped, according to a local Independent Councillor.
Cavan Councillor Shane P O'Reilly says "an extreme amount" of cars are failing NCT tests and many people can't afford to buy new cars.
A car must get an NCT every two years once it's four years old, and every year when it's ten years old. A report from the Irish Independent yesterday found that nearly half of the 1.5 million vehicles that did the NCT last year failed.
Cavan NCT Centre reported the highest failure rate at 59%, with Derrybeg NCT Centre in Donegal following closely behind at 56%. Operated by Spanish company Applus, the NCT service was introduced in 2000 to prevent road accidents caused by faulty vehicles.
24 years later, however, independent Cavan councillor Shane O’Reilly said the test should be reevaluated – and most likely scrapped. Councillor O'Reilly says the test itself should be re-evaluated.
