After almost 200 years in operation, the Northern Standard have published the last ever edition today.
The Northern Standard has been the longest established newspaper circulating in County Monaghan and it has been telling Monaghan's story every week since the first issue was published back in January 10th, 1839.
Management at the local paper announced the closure last week citing challenging circumstances created by a radically altered and irreversible commercial environment which has seen The Northern Standard struggle to sustain its long-term viability.
They said the point has been reached where the regrettable decision to cease publication has been taken.
The paper moved its offices from Market Street to Mill Street, and then on to The Diamond in Monaghan town in 1872, where it has operated from ever since and acquired by William Swan in the same year.
In 1971, The Northern Standard was bought by Patrick Smyth and has remained in the ownership of the Smyth family up until its closure today.
