A Co Monaghan councillor has called on Government to impose tougher regulations on social media use for under-16s.
Cllr Niamh McCooey has warned of the increasing dangers posed by unregulated online platforms.
While smartphones are part of everyday life, Cllr McCooey says that the real issue lies in the unrestricted access children have to harmful online environments.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr McCooey says social media platforms were not designed with children in mind. She says young users are routinely exposed to harmful, misleading or inappropriate content. As a result, she is calling on Minister Patrick O'Donovan to address the risks posed to young people in the digital space immediately:
