A level playing field is required for the Mercosur agreement to work for farmers here.
That's the view of Fine Gael Councillor TP O'Reilly who says a united front is needed to show how opposed Ireland is to the planned deal.
The Cavan Councillor said that all MEP'S across Europe should be encouraged to vote against the current deal.
He believes that the government weren't last minute on opposing the deal, adding that it has been in the programme for government.
He said the beef coming in to Ireland needs to be up to the standards of what is produced here and he doesn't believe that will be the case.
Cllr O'Reilly said it's important to note that it's far from a done deal yet.
