Two motorists in Co Monaghan among stand out 'National Slow Down Day' offences

National Slow Down Day aims to increase compliance with speed limits and act as a deterrent to those who break them.

National slow down day has ended, with two motorists in Co Monaghan among the stand-out speeding offenders.

Gardaí conducted visibility activities, including checkpoints, at 1,300 'speed enforcement zones' across the country as part of a 24 hour operation that ended at 7 this morning.

The event aims to increase compliance with speed limits and act as a deterrent to those who break them.

The Road Safety Authority estimates that 30 percent of fatal crashes here are caused by speeding.

In Co Monaghan, one motorist was detected driving at 79 km/h in a 60 Zone on the Monaghan Road in Castleblayney, while another was caught doing 122km/h in a 100 Zone on the N2 Annamarran in Carrickmacross.
