Undercover footage allegedly taken at four Cavan pig farms is incredibly distressing according to an animal rights spokesperson.
The Department of Agriculture are investigating claims of animal cruelty at Irish pig farms.
Undercover footage and images obtained by the National Animal Rights Association and Animal Rebellion Ireland claims to show clear cases of animal cruelty at four Cavan pig farms. According to the NARA, pigs with untreated injuries, improper disposal of dead animals and what appears to be veterinary medicine, and animals stored in cramped and dark conditions are all contained in the footage. It comes as the 2 groups held a press conference on Wednesday regarding pig welfare on pig farms, calling for a complete end to the entire Irish pig industry.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show this morning, spokesperson for the National Animal Rights Association Laura Broxon says the Department of Agriculture clearly aren't monitoring these farms correctly
In a statement issued to Northern Sound, the Irish Farmers Association say Irish pig farmers operate to the highest standards and that farmers are subject to regular audits and unannounced inspections.
They say this is a vital sector that plays an important role in food production and supporting the local economy.
The statement concludes with "farmers are committed to maintain the highest standards to protect the health of their animals
