USC charge meant to be short time measure - local businessman

Kevin Redmond found fault with what was aimed at being a good news story from Budget 2025.

A well-known Monaghan Town businessman has questioned the budget measure which will see a reduction in the universal service charge.

Kevin Redmond, who owns Andy's Bar, joined the Northern Sound panel on budget day.

Finance Minister Jack Chambers opted to increase to the upper band of the second rate of USC by just over  1,600 to  27,382. The minister also announced a reduction from 4% to 3% in the USC rate levied on income up to  70,044.

However, Kevin Redmond found fault with what was aimed at being a good news story from Budget 2025. He said the Universal Social Charge was a tax brought in following the economic crash of 2008 and was only ever meant to be a short-term measure.
