There are 86 council houses in County Cavan and 20 in Monaghan which are currently un-used. The figures came from a Freedom Of Information request lodged by leader of Aontú, Peadar Tóibín, recently.
Aontú lodged Freedom of Information requests with every local authority in the state and the answers showed there are currently 3,796 homes, which are owned by councils in Ireland that are not in use.
Cavan-Monaghan Aontú Senator Sarah O'Reilly has led the argument for abolishing the rules around planning permission for mobile homes in people's homes as a way to ease the pressure of the housing crisis. She said the local figures are a "catastrophe" for the many families waiting on housing lists in the middle of a crisis, for as long as 10 years (listen below):
