A local councillor has strongly condemned the recent act of vandalism at the Sliabh Beagh area, where the fencing and information boards at the picnic benches beside the historic Penal Cross were destroyed.
Cllr Pauric Clerkin described the damage as disgraceful and a senseless act that shows no respect to our local heritage or community spaces.
He said Sliabh Beagh is a place of cultural, historical, and recreational importance and the destruction of facilities meant for the enjoyment of families, walkers, and visitors is deeply disappointing.
The vandalism has caused significant damage to the picnic area, which is widely used by locals and tourists alike.
Cllr Clerkin is calling on anyone with information to come forward and report it to the Gardaí. "I am urging the community to stay vigilant and to work together to protect our shared spaces. Acts like this undermine the efforts being made to promote and preserve our local environment."
Efforts are now being made to assess the damage and begin restoration work as soon as possible. Cllr Clerkin has pledged to work with Monaghan County Council and relevant agencies to ensure the area is restored for public use.
