Virginia Credit Union has been alerted to a fraudulent SMS message that has been received by multiple members across a number of credit unions.
The message falsely purports to be issued by the member's credit union.
According to Virginia Credit Union, the message is designed to create urgency by referencing the creation of a new payee, provides a Dublin based number, and prompts the member to contact the fraudster.
If a member calls the number provided, they are likely speaking directly with a fraudster who may attempt to obtain online banking login credentials, or request part or all of the member's PIN.
Virginia Credit Union is advising members to never to call numbers provided in unsolicited text messages.
They should also always to use the official contact number listed on the credit union's website or bank card.
