The family of a girl killed in a crash while on the way to her debs in Monaghan has lodged an appeal against the sentences of the driver of the car.
62-year-old Anthony McGinn was jailed for seven years last month for dangerous driving causing the deaths of Kiea McCann and Dlava Mohammed. He also pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm to Dlava Mohammed's sister, Avin.
Keia McCann's family believe there should be a stronger sentence, as two surviving passengers gave statements which said they asked Mr McGinn to slow down. They confirmed they formally wrote to the DPP for the sentence to be appealed.
Monaghan Circuit Court was told last month that Anthony McGinn's white BMW was estimated to be travelling over 150km/h in an 80km/h zone prior to the collision. His impact speed when the vehicle hit the base of the tree was 121.5km/h. On July 31st 2023, the two teenagers, Kiea and Dlava were making their way to the debs ball in the Westenra Arms Hotel in Monaghan Town along with Dlava's sister Avin.
The car they were travelling in, driven by Mr McGinn, struck a tree on the N54 at Legnakelly, Clones, killing Kiea, Dlava, and seriously injuring Avin.
Kiea's father, Frankie McCann explained on the Wider View earlier why they feel they haven't got justice.
Meanwhile, Teresa and Frankie McCann says speed was the main factor that caused the death of Kiea and her best friend Dlava.
Teresa says a tougher sentence should have been imposed on the accused.
