West Cavan based ecologist Anja Murray has released a new book titled - Frog Routes, Polka-Dot Newts and Other Treasures of Irish Nature.
The book is a celebration of the wild wonders all around us. From frogs following age-old paths to shimmering newts hidden in quiet ponds, this book uncovers the beauty and mystery of Ireland’s small creatures and secret places.
Over the last couple of decades Anja says society has turned more towards technology and engineering to the "detriment" of the natural world.
Despite this, she believes people are beginning to "wake up" and realise that this is not the way to go.
According to Anja, people are getting better at recognising how important trees, birds and animals are to the eco system which she described as our "life support" as humans.
Speaking on today's Joe Finnegan Show, Anja said that while climate change is having a massive impact, it is not the primary factor driving the loss of nature in our landscapes.
She says factors like "habitat loss" and "land use change" are causing the most impact.
The Cavan-based ecologist said: "The primary factors driving the loss of nature in our landscapes is land use change, habitat loss, over exploitation and successive use of fertilisers polluting local rivers and a lack of native trees and plants. Climate change is becoming rapidly more and more significant in how it impacts species because they're not as resilient because they have lost so much ground."
